When Sharaman (Ronald Pickup), the king of Persia, arrives at Alamut, he reproaches Tus, his eldest son, for having made the decision to attack the city and although proud of Dastan, chides him for not doing the right thing, as he did before. He suggests that Dastan, rather than Tus should marry Tamina. Prince Dastan unknowingly presents a poisoned robe, given to him by Tus, to his father, who dies upon donning it. Dastan is blamed for the king’s murder and flees Alamut with Princess Tamina. In their first camp, Tamina attempts to kill the prince and recover the dagger, during which Dastan finds out that the dagger can reverse time. During their journey, the duo meet a shady ostrich racing-organizer and tax-averse entrepreneur, Sheik Amar (Alfred Molina), with his knife-throwing African friend Seso (Steve Toussaint). Dastan offers Tamina up as a slave in return for supplies; however, Amar betrays him because he recognizes him as the murderer of the king, for whom there is an “obscene” reward being offered. Dastan and Tamina escape and return to Persia for King Sharaman’s funeral; here, Dastan attempts to convince his uncle Nizam that he did not kill his father. Dastan discovers that Tamina has taken the Dagger; however, he then notices Nizam’s hands are burned. Garsiv and the city guards appear and attack Dastan and he is forced to escape.

Dastan catches up with Tamina and explains that the villainous brother of the King, Nizam, was behind the murder. Once Tamina finally explains everything about the Dagger, Dastan realizes why Nizam wants the Dagger of Time: to use it with the massive Sandglass to go back in time and undo saving Sharaman from a lion so he could become king. He fabricated the false allegations that Alamut had been dealing weapons to Persia’s enemies so that he would have the opportunity to search the city for the Sandglass. However, opening the Sandglass will trigger an apocalyptic sandstorm that would end the world. Meanwhile, Nizam tries to convince Garsiv and Tus Dastan is trying to overthrow them and should be killed immediately; when this fails, he hires the Hassansins, a group of highly skilled warriors who once served as hired killers for Persian royalty, to slay Dastan.

Dastan and Tamina are again captured by Sheik Amar and Seso, seeking to rebuild his ruined business by turning them in for the enormous bounty. But that night, when everyone is asleep, the Hassansin leader (Gísli Örn Garðarsson) attacks the group by controlling a number of vipers. Many of the group die, but Dastan uses the Dagger and manages to kill all the snakes and saves everyone. The next day, the pair accompanied by Sheik and Seso travel to the secret sanctuary in the mountains near India, where it is possible to seal away the Dagger. However, they run into Garsiv’s men. Dastan manages to persuade his brother that he is innocent, only for Garsiv to be fatally wounded by a Hassansin. The Hassansins attack, killing most of the group, and their leader manages to snatch the Dagger of Time from Tamina. However, Dastan is saved from the last Hassansin by Garsiv, who then dies of his wounds.

The group returns to Alamut to reveal the truth about Nizam and the Dagger to Tus. Dastan confronts Tus and explains the Dagger’s mechanics to him and then kills himself; Tus brings Dastan back to life by rewinding time and realises his brother has been innocent all along. Soon after, however, Nizam arrives and kills Tus, leaving his Hassansin guard to kill Dastan. The Dagger is once again in Nizam’s hands, but Dastan manages to defeat the Hassansin with Tamina’s help. Nizam goes to the Sandglass caves beneath Alamut, as Dastan and Tamina take a more secret route. After a short battle with the Hassansins’ leader, fatally wounding him and sending him plummeting to his death in a chasm, Dastan and Tamina kiss. They then reach Nizam before he can pierce the Sandglass with the Dagger, but he knocks Tamina and Dastan over the edge. Dastan grabs hold of Tamina; knowing he cannot stop Nizam and save her, Tamina professes her love for Dastan and lets go, plummeting to her death and sacrificing herself to stop Nizam. Driven to fight on, Dastan manages to pull himself up. Nizam stabs the Sandglass with the Dagger, but Dastan grabs a hold and opens the Dagger, rather than activating it, causing the Sands of Time to flow through freely. Time reverses to when Dastan first obtained the Dagger, now fully aware of all that has occurred.

Dastan stops the siege of Alamut, revealing Nizam’s treachery; Nizam attacks Dastan, but is killed by Tus. After apologizing for the ransacking of her city, Tus suggests that perhaps Tamina should become Dastan’s wife as a sign of good will. The Prince returns the Dagger of Time to her. Later on, the two take a walk together, and Dastan and Tamina have a small conversation, in which Dastan hints at his knowledge of the Dagger’s powers and tells Tamina that he looks forward to a future with her.

In order to sell the lie, the couple travels to Sitka, Alaska, Andrew’s home town to meet his family. During the flight, Andrew goes through the list of questions that they’ll be asked and informs Margaret that he knows almost everything about her but that she has to learn everything about him in just four days. Upon arriving in Sitka, Margaret meets Andrew’s mother (Mary Steenburgen) and grandmother (Betty White), who welcomes her warmly. During the ride home, Margaret notices that nearly every shop in the town is named after Paxton and realizes that Paxton is Andrew’s surname and all the shops belong to his family. Soon Margaret realizes that Andrew’s family is among the richest and most prestigious in Alaska and the live in a fort-like house across the lake. Upon her arrival at their house, Margaret is welcomed by a huge party which consists of the neighbors and friends of the family. She also meets Gertude (Malin Akerman), Andrew’s ex-girlfriend. During the party, Andrew confronts his dad (Craig T Nelson), who is shocked by his decision of marrying his boss and thinks that he is using her to get ahead in his career. After his brief conflict with his father, Andrew announces the proposal to the party and the two quickly forge up a story about their relationship and are forced to kiss each other. After the party is over his mother shows Margaret their room which they’ll have to share.

The next morning Margaret loses her cellphone while saving Andrew’s family dog from an eagle. On hearing that, Andrew comforts Margaret by telling her that they could order the cellphone with the same number and go to the town and get it. Andrew’s mother and grandmother take Margaret out to a local bar to enjoy a strip dance show by a locally famous and funny dancer, Ramone (Oscar Nunez). During the show Margaret meets Gertude again and they have a quick chat in which she learns that Andrew never wanted to get in his family business and wanted to become an editor and make his own life (much to his father’s disappointment) and also learns that he and Gertude were quite serious about their relationship but Andrew wanted her to run with him to New York City and start a new life to which she refused as she didn’t believe in leaving her home town. On returning home, the trio finds Andrew angrily chopping a log with an axe after having an argument with his father over their family business. Next she overhears the conversation between Andrew’s parents and learns that he has dealings with his father as his father wants him to take over their family business while Andrew wants to make his own. Later Margaret goes to the shower but forgets the towels and does not sense Andrew coming in the room, Andrew too is not aware of her presence as his iPod is plugged in, takes his clothes off. As Margaret tries to reach to the towels kept in the cupboard, she is attacked by the family dog and she runs into Andrew naked. Later that night after their embarrassing encounter Andrew and Margaret have a personal chat in which Margaret describes her earlier life and also reveals that she hasn’t been with a man for almost two years. Surprised Andrew tells her that she is very beautiful to which she feels complimented and the two build a bond. The following day, the family suggests they could marry the same weekend, an idea they reluctantly accept. Andrew is stressed because the marriage is actually a sham, and Margaret tries to comfort and convince him, finding herself genuinely caring for him. To sort out her emotions, she goes for a bike ride into the woods, where she finds Grandma Annie “giving thanks” to mother nature in a ritual. Annie invites her to join her, and they end up dancing, while Andrew watches.

After getting her new phone, Margaret tries to catch up on her work through a computer while Andrew chats with Gertrude outside. On their way home, Andrew’s mother and grandmother steal Margaret away to fit her in the wedding dress she will be wearing (which once belonged to his Grandmother) and Grandmother gives Margaret a 150 year-old pendant which also belongs to her. After Margaret realizes how much trouble she is making for Andrew, she has a meltdown which results in her hijacking a boat (with a much confused Andrew). She tells him that she has been alone since she was 16 years old after her family died and she almost forgot what it feels like having people in her life but after coming there she realized her faults and that she doesn’t want to mess up his life as he has everything she never had. While releasing her frustration, she lets go of the helm and stumbles to the back of the boat while Andrew tries to calm her down. When he makes a sharp turn to avoid hitting a buoy, Margaret falls out of the boat. Andrew quickly turns the boat around and saves her.

The same day Mr. Gilbertson, the U.S. immigrations official who is investigating Margaret’s visa application, contacts Joe in hopes of verifying the marriage is a sham. Joe instead invites him to Sitka to see the “happy couple” interact, hoping that if the marriage fails Andrew will settle down, stay in Alaska and give up writing to take over the business. Mr. Gilbertson makes a deal with his father and states that Andrew won’t be criminally punished if he admits the marriage is a scam, but Margaret will be deported to Canada. Andrew, who now cares deeply about Margaret, vehemently denies that the relationship is a lie.

During the wedding ceremony, Margaret decides she cannot marry Andrew and confesses the business arrangement in front of everyone, including Mr. Gilbertson, who informs her she has twenty four hours to get back to Canada. Since Margaret admitted to the scam, Andrew does not get jail time. Margaret returns to New York to pack her things. Andrew rushes to their room only to find she has already left, leaving his manuscript with a note of praise from her on the bed. Gertrude attempts to comfort Andrew, and encourages him to pursue Margaret.

As he rushes out of the house to confront Margaret, another argument arises between Joe and Andrew. Annie has a heart attack while trying to stop them and while being airlifted to the hospital, she convinces Joe and Andrew to quit arguing before she “passes away”. Once they agree, Annie reveals she had faked it, just so they would stop fighting and try to make it to the plane to stop Margaret from going back to New York. Andrew attempts to stop Margaret’s flight, but cannot do so in time. Andrew then rushes to New York and shows up at the office where he confesses his love for Margaret in front of the entire office staff, proposing marriage all over again as he “wants to date Margaret.” The two go to Mr. Gilbertson once more to get engaged, this time “for real.”

As the end credits roll, Gilbertson interrogates not only Andrew and Margaret, but also Joe, Grace, Annie, Ramone (the exotic dancer from Margaret’s bachelorette party), and Kevin (Andrew’s family’s dog).

Film ini dimulai pada tahun 1933 ketika John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) dibawa ke Penjara Negara Bagian Indiana oleh mitranya John “Red” Hamilton (Jason Clarke), yang menyamar sebagai seorang petugas pengirim tahanan. Dillinger dan Hamilton berhasil menyergap beberapa penjaga dan membebaskan anggota komplotan mereka termasuk Charles Makley (Christian Stolte) dan Harry Pierpont (David Wenham). Penjebolan penjara ini hampir-hampir berhasil tanpa rintangan, sampai salah satu anggota komplotan, Ed Shouse (Michael Vieau), memukul seorang penjaga sampai mati. Melalui si polisi korup Zarkovich, Purvis mendapat bantuan seorang mucikari sekaligus kenalan Dillinger, Anna Sage (Branka Katic), setelah mengancamnya dengan deportasi jika Sage tidak mau bekerja sama. Sage setuju untuk menjebak Dillinger, yang saat itu sedang bersembunyi di tempat Sage.

Malam itu, Dillinger dan Sage menonton sebuah film yang diperankan oleh Clark Gable berjudul Manhattan Melodrama di Biograph Theater. Ketika film usai, Dillinger dan Sage pergi dari bioskop itu dan Purvis mendekati mereka. Dillinger menyadari ada polisi (yaitu Reinecke, yang memukuli kekasih Dillinger) dan tertembak beberapa kali sebelum ia dapat mengambil senjatanya untuk melawan Reinecke yang melukai Billie. Agen Winstead, yang menembakkan tembakan terakhir yang fatal, mendengarkan kata-kata terakhir Dillinger.

The witnesses are an overzealous cop, an unreliable junkie, and an eight-year-old girl. For some reason agents Anderson and Hallaway can’t comprehend, the pieces of the puzzle just don’t seem to fit together. HE LOVED HER LIKE THERE WAS NO TOMMOROW

Ian Wyndham (Nicholls) is a British Businessman who lives with his musician girlfriend, Samantha Andrews (Hewitt) in London. Ian takes Sam for granted making Sam feeling vulnerable in the role of the one who loves more. The first half of the film describes a single day which culminates in a row in which Samantha’s frustration boils over. The taxi Samantha catches is hit by another car in front of Ian and she dies. An inconsolable Ian goes back to bed alone only to wake up at the start of the same day and Sam still alive suggesting that it had all been a dream. At that point, he comes to realize that he had been taking Samantha for granted; and as he comes to relive the same day, Ian is then given a second chance to correct his mistakes. He does his best to get it right the second time around and in the end, becomes the victim of the accident in his girlfriend’s stead, as he holds her tight for the last time.

Petualangan kemudian membawa Langdon dan Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer) yang ingin mengetahui pembunuh ayahnya ke Vatican di mana persaudaraan Illuminati mengancam akan meledakkan kota suci ini dan membunuh semua orang di dalamnya. Satu-satunya cara melacak si pembunuh adalah dengan mengikuti tanda-tanda yang ditinggalkan sang anggota Illuminati dengan harapan dapat mencegah pembunuhan massal ini.

Sayangnya sang pembunuh hanya meninggalkan petunjuk di atas mayat para Kardinal yang telah ia bunuh satu per satu. Kini Langdon dan Vetra harus berpacu untuk mendahului sang pembunuh atau semua Kardinal yang diculik mati dan tak ada petunjuk mengenai lokasi peledak yang dipasang persaudaraan Illuminati ini.

Seperti kebanyakan film yang diadaptasi dari novel, penyesuaian mesti dilakukan karena keterbatasan durasi tayang dan lain sebagainya. Ini yang sering kali membuat para fans novel merasa kecewa dengan visualisasi dari tulisan yang sempat mereka baca sebelumnya. Film berjudul ANGELS AND DEMONS ini juga bukan pengecualian. Bila Anda sempat membaca novelnya, Anda pasti tahu bahwa ada beberapa fakta atau detail yang harus ‘disesuaikan’. Terlepas dari segala ‘penyesuaian’ itu, film adalah sebuah karya yang layak dinilai sebagai dirinya sendiri.

Sebagai sebuah film, ANGELS AND DEMONS ini cukup mampu membawa inti permasalahan dari novel Dan Brown ke dalam bentuk visual. Ron Howard, sang sutradara sanggup membuat sebuah film yang cukup berimbang dan tak memihak mana pun. Agama dan ilmu pengetahuan dapat berjalan beriringan selama ada saling pengertian dan toleransi.

Karena keterbatasan waktu juga maka film ini jadi terasa bertempo sangat cepat. Tak ada waktu untuk menarik nafas atau beristirahat sejenak. Ini tak bisa dihindari juga karena versi novelnya juga punya tempo yang lumayan cepat meski masih ada titik-titik di mana kita diberi waktu untuk sekedar menghela nafas. Ron Howard sepertinya juga tak mau mengulang kesalahan yang terjadi pada THE DA VINCI CODE dan menghilangkan unsur romantis yang sebelumnya sempat dikritik karena tak ada chemistry antara Tom Hanks dan lawan mainnya.

Tampilan visual dari Sistine Chapel, Pantheon, Gereja dan Makam terlihat sangat mengagumkan meski Howard harus melakukan pengambilan gambar bukan di tempat aslinya. Sebuah tontonan yang menarik selama Anda tak membanding-bandingkannya dengan versi novelnya. (Fatchur Rochim/kpl/roc)

Biografi

Fyodor adalah anak kedua dari tujuh bersaudara yang dilahirkan dari Mikhail dan Maria Dostoyevsky. Tak lama setelah ibunya meninggal karena tuberkulosis pada 1837, ia dan saudaranya Mikhail dikirim ke Akademi Teknik Militer di St. Petersburg. Meskipun tidak diketahui sebabnya, orang yakin bahwa Mikhail Dostoyevsky dibunuh oleh petani-petaninya sendiri, yang konon menjadi marah ketika Mikhail mabuk dan kemudian melakukan kekerasan. Dostoyevsky dikirim ke Akademi Teknik Militer St. Petersburg dan karena ia tidak begitu pandai dalam matematika, mata pelajaran yang dibencinya, ia pun tidak berhasil baik di sekolah itu. Sebaliknya, ia lebih memusatkan perhatian pada sastra. Tokoh pujaannya adalah Honore de Balzac dan pada 1843 ia bahkan menerjemahkan salah satu karya terbesar Balzac, Eugenie Grandet ke dalam bahasa Rusia. Sekitar waktu ini Dostoyevsky mulai menulis fiksinya sendiri dan pada 1846, karyanya yang pertama, sebuah novel pendek dalam bentuk surat, Orang-orang Miskin, mendapatkan sambutan hangat, khususnya oleh kritikus liberal, Vissarion Belinsky, dengan pujiannya yang termasyhur, “Seorang Gogol yang baru telah muncul!” Dostoyevsky ditangkap dan ditahan pada 23 April 1849 karena terlibat dalam kegiatan revolusioner melawan Tsar Nikolai I. Pada 16 November tahun itu ia dijatuhi hukuman mati karena kegiatan anti pemerintahan yang terkait dengan sebuah kelompok intelektual liberal, Lingkaran Petrashevsky. Setelah sebuah pura-pura dihukum mati — matanya ditutup dan ia diperintahkan berdiri di luar di udara dingin sambil menunggu untuk ditembak mati oleh sebuah regu tembak, hukuman Dostoyevsky diubah menjadi beberapa tahun dikirim ke pembuangan untuk bekerja paksa di sebuah kamp penjara katorga di Omsk, Siberia. Epilepsinya yang telah lama diidapnya, kian meningkat selama masa ini. Ia dibebaskan dari penjara pada 1854, dan diwajibkan melayani di Resimen Siberia. Dostoyevsky menghabisi lima tahun berikutnya sebagai seorang kopral (dan belakangan letnan) di dalam Barisan Batalyon Resimen ke-7 yang ditempatkan di benteng Semipalatinsk di Kazakhstan. Ini adalah titik balik dalam kehidupan pengarang ini. Dostoyevsky meninggalkan gagasan-gagasan idealnya semula dan menjadi seorang Kristen dan penentang keras nihilisme dan sosialisme ateis. Ia belakangan menjalin persahabatan yang aneh dengan pengarang konservatif, Konstantin Pobedonostsev. Ia mulai menjalin hubungan, dan belakangan menikah dengan Maria Dmitrievna Isaeva, janda seornag kenalannya di Siberia. Pada 1860, ia kembali ke St. Petersburg, dan di sana ia menulis sejumlah jurnal sastra yang gagal dengan kakaknya, Mikhail. Dostoyevsky sangat terpukul oleh kematian istrinya pada 1864, diikuti tak lama kemudian oleh kematian saudaranya. Dari segi keuangan ia menjadi lumpuh karena utang bisnisnya dan keharusan membiayai janda kakaknya serta anak-anaknya. Dostoyevsky tenggelam dalam suatu depresi yang mendalam, seringkali mengunjungi tempat judi dan terus-menerus kalah. Dalam tahun-tahun terakhirnya, Fyodor Dostoyevsky tinggal lama di resor Staraya Russa yang lebih dekat ke St Petersburg dan lebih murah daripada resor-resor Jerman. Ia meninggal pada 28 Januari (O.S.), 1881 karena pendarahan paru-paru yang disebabkan oleh serangan epilepsi. Jenazahnya dikebumikan di Pemakaman Tikhvin di Biara Alexander Nevsky, St. Petersburg, Russia. Empat puluh ribu orang Rusia meratapi dan menghadiri penguburannya.
